UHF RFID readers: types, comparison and project selection

An RFID reader interrogates passive UHF tags and sends the captured codes to a tracking system. A single warehouse may require three different reader types: a multi-port reader at the gate, a desktop reader at the processing station and a handheld terminal for inventory counts. This page compares four types of UHF RFID readers and explains which one fits each task. We do not sell hardware from a stocked storefront; we select and supply it for each project.

Frequencies for Kazakhstan

Projects in Kazakhstan use the European ETSI 865–868 MHz band. A reader manufactured only for the US FCC 902–928 MHz band is unsuitable for deployment in Kazakhstan, even though it may look identical. Most models are available in both versions. During selection, we record the regional version in the specification and verify the frequency band, channels and power for the country of deployment.

How to choose

  1. Read-zone geometry. One directional zone, such as a driveway or doorway, can use an integrated reader: Р6 for a compact zone or Р15 for long range. Several zones or a wide gate require a multi-port С4/С8/С16 reader, named for its number of antenna ports, with external antennas distributed around the frame. Antenna selection is a separate task; see UHF antennas.
  2. Interface to your system. Wiegand 26 connects directly to an access control or barrier gate controller. RS-232/RS-485 communicates with industrial controllers. TCP/IP and PoE suit networked projects: one cable supplies power and transfers data, simplifying installation at gates and under ceilings. USB is sufficient for desktop models (Д1).
  3. Power and control. Fixed and handheld models have adjustable power of up to 33 dBm. This allows the read zone to be narrowed so tags in an adjacent driveway are not captured. Power is set during commissioning rather than estimated by eye.
  4. Operating conditions. Outdoor locations and wash-down areas require IP65–IP67 enclosures; IP54–IP55 is sufficient for heated indoor spaces.
  5. Software and integration. A reader without integration is only a source of events. Our article on the RFID API explains how read events are delivered to 1C, WMS and ERP systems.

Typical applications

  • Laundry and textile tracking. A batch of linen passes through the read zone as a group, without item-by-item counting; sewn-in tags are read in stacks and trolleys. Receiving and issue use a portal or multi-port reader, while local checks use a handheld terminal. See RFID for textile tracking.
  • Warehouse receiving and shipping gates. A multi-port reader (С4/С8/С16) with antennas around the gate frame captures an entire pallet. See RFID for warehouses.
  • Inventory of materials and fixed assets. An Android Н15 handheld terminal captures tags while the operator walks, and the results are reconciled with the accounting system. See RFID inventory and asset tracking.

We verify each scenario before procurement through a pilot in one area or by testing tags and readers in the laboratory.

Questions and answers

How does a fixed multi-port reader differ from an integrated reader?

A multi-port reader uses external antennas: one reader serves 4/8/16 antennas distributed across the control zone. An integrated reader has an antenna inside its enclosure, making it one device for one directional zone. A multi-port reader is more economical for gates with several frames, while an integrated reader suits a single driveway.

Which reader does a laundry need?

Usually two types: a portal or multi-port reader at receiving and issue for group reading of sewn-in tags, plus a handheld terminal for targeted search and reconciliation. The configuration depends on linen flow and site layout and is confirmed by an on-site pilot.

Wiegand, RS-232 or TCP/IP: which should I choose?

Use Wiegand 26 when the reader connects to an existing access control controller, RS-232/RS-485 when it connects to an industrial controller or automation system, and TCP/IP when data is sent to server software from several read points. PoE is preferable in the latter case because one cable carries both power and data.

Will an FCC 902–928 MHz reader work in Kazakhstan?

Projects in Kazakhstan use the European ETSI 865–868 MHz band. A model designed only for FCC 902–928 MHz should not be ordered. We record the regional version during selection and verify the band, channels and power for the country of deployment.
